Why use them?

Dictionaries and encyclopaedias are great to use to start your research

You can:

Define your topic using subject dictionaries

Find background information in encyclopaedias

Identify other keywords and alternative terms for database searching

 
 

Getting started

You need to gain an understanding of your topic.

This page gives you some suggestions of materials to use for gathering general information.

You can use dictionaries, encyclopedias, or core text books. Once you have a general overview of your topic you can start searching for more specific resources, such as journal articles and books.
